ATL Jewish Film has announced the winners of its first ever Student Filmmaking Competition Showcase.
ATL Jewish Film (formerly known as the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival) hosted the inaugural showcase on Nov. 19 at the Tara Theatre, according to a press release. The showcase consisted of 10 student films from schools such as Cumberland Academy of Georgia, The Galloway School, The Lovett School, Marist School, North Atlanta High School, and more.
Three awards were given out at the showcase. The Building Bridges Award went to “Opposite Equalities” from students at Georgia Cyber Academy. The film follows two high school girls who face classism and colorism while trying to win a scholarship.
The Peer Award went to “Mother’s Song,” a film about a teenager and her adopted older sister coming together years after their mother has died, from students at The Lovett School.
The last award, the Artistic Excellence Award, went to a film called “You Can Always Trust Me,” from students at North Atlanta High School. The film follows a 17 year old as she relives the pain of betrayal by those around her and herself in a dream.
“This showcase reflects what happens when students are given the space and support to tell stories that matter to them,” ATL Jewish Film Executive and Artistic Director Kenny Blank in the release. “Their films show tremendous heart and imagination. Most importantly, they demonstrate how storytelling can bridge differences and bring communities together.”
The Building Bridges and Artistic Excellence Awards were determined by a jury made up of filmmakers, industry professionals, educators, and ATL Jewish Film supporters. The Peer Award was selected by students participating in the competition.
ATL Jewish Film plans to hold the Student Filmmaking Competition Showcase again in 2026.
