Fees double at state parks, despite budget surplus

ABOVE THE WATERLINE | SALLY BETHEA

🏞 Georgians love parks. Whether located in cities or remote areas, they are places where people can go for physical and mental well-being: a way to manage stress in an increasingly stressful world.

Public green spaces are also essential to democracy. They function as social “infrastructure,” providing shared, accessible places in nature that can foster a sense of community.

Today, most of us are living with high levels of uncertainty in our personal lives and in our country. Affordability is a serious concern. A recent poll found that a majority of Americans say they’re spending more on groceries and utility bills than a year ago. At such a time – with a budget and reserve surplus of more than $14 billion – why did the state of Georgia decide to double the cost for its citizens to find exercise and some respite in a public park?

💸 Sally Bethea explores this question in the most recent edition of Above the Waterline. Check it out here.

City of Atlanta unveils ‘Michael Langford Drive’ in honor of local community advocate

🛣 Atlanta leaders recently gathered to unveil “Michael Langford Drive,” officially renaming a portion of Pryor Road and Pryor Street in honor of the late community advocate. The new name is attributed to the stretch that runs from Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard to Lakewood Avenue.

Michael Langford Sr., a native Atlantan, originally became a grassroots community advocate alongside his brother, Rev. Arthur Langford, Jr., leading him to a diverse job career that spanned political strategy, community organizing, nonprofit leadership, and public service.

Influx of data centers threatens air quality, public health in Atlanta, environmental activists say

🌬 Clean air advocates say unchecked growth in Georgia’s data center industry could harm public health, especially for people in Metro Atlanta where air quality has worsened.

Five data center projects are ongoing, and more are proposed — all in the city of South Fulton. They are being built in anticipation of growth in artificial intelligence.

“We need to connect the dots between industrial development, environmental pollution, and our right to breathe clean air,” said Kiya Stanford with the advocacy group Moms Clean Air Force in Georgia, adding that residents should attend local government meetings to share their concerns.

🎭 Shakespeare had it right, “the play’s the thing.” And that was especially true of Atlanta in the 1890s. The theater was the dominant form of entertainment and, as you would expect, it was an industry that gave many people a chance to make money.

One such Atlantan was Martin J. Dooley, who made a nice living in the theater advertising business – that is until he crossed the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

Inman Park’s Painted Park wins Historic Renovation Award

🛠 Painted Park was honored with a Historic Renovation Award at the Georgia Design Awards last week. The two-story “eatertainment” concept comes from Painted Hospitality’s Justin Amick and William Stallworth (The Painted Pin, Painted Duck, and Painted Pickle).

Painted Hospitality transformed the 1890 Factory Terminal building along North Highland, which was originally the headquarters of the Atlanta Pipe and Foundry Company, into a vibrant, multi-use drinking and dining destination just steps from the Eastside Beltline in Inman Park.

The renovation preserved and repaired original architectural elements, including tin ceilings, brick walls, copper piping, concrete floors, Vermont slate roofing, and expansive windows with original rosette moldings, according to a press release.

Grand opening of Town Green marks a new era for downtown Tucker

⛲ Tucker Town Green’s lush two-acre park opened last Friday, debuting as a new place for play, connection, and entertainment for downtown Tucker.

“We see the Green as the heart and soul of downtown Tucker,” City Manager John McHenry told Rough Draft Atlanta. “Now that the park is complete …we see this as a catalyst.”

If the estimated 400 Tucker residents who filled the park space Friday night is any indication, the city could see more economic activity and engagement in the weeks and months to come. The $8.6 million development includes a stage, state-of-the-art bathrooms, two playground areas, fountains, and an S-shaped sidewalk.

Theatre Review: Theatrical Outfit’s powerful and poetic production of ‘The Glass Menagerie’

🦄 “Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve…I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.” How many students have read these opening words from Tennessee Williams’ 1944 legendary play “The Glass Menagerie,” currently on view at Theatrical Outfit? Far more, I fear, than have seen the play, especially a production as poetic and powerful as this one.

That’s the thing about “masterpieces,” when they’re done well by an inspired, gifted cast: You have a sense of discovery as though you had never seen it before, never heard the familiar words, or been mesmerized by Laura’s little glass animals – and you’re charmed.

Artistic Director Matt Torney’s shimmering, magnetic version will run through Nov. 23, with a couple of added two-a-day performances.

🎁 The Spruill Gallery has announced that its 32nd annual Holiday Art Fair will begin this Friday. This year’s market will feature handmade gifts and crafts created by nearly 150 Georgia-based artists.

“We’re proud that the Holiday Art Fair is a holiday staple here in Dunwoody and a place where community members can find truly unique, one-of-a-kind holiday gifts while also supporting local artists and makers,” said Spruill CEO Alan Mothner.

In addition to general holiday shopping, community members can also look forward to several free events hosted at this year’s Holiday Art Fair, including an opening wine & cheese reception on Nov. 14, complimentary photos with Santa on Nov. 22, cookies and cocoa on Dec. 13, free pet treats and a paw-printing station on Dec. 14, and a wine tasting on Dec. 19.

‘Delayed Gratification’: Stories of Atlanta by Lance Russell

VIA SAPORTAREPORT

🏀 With the news this past week of the passing of basketball legend Lenny Wilkens, we wanted to rerun one of our earliest Stories of Atlanta videos about the Hawks’ legendary player and coach.

Wilkens was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on three separate occasions, once as a player, once as a coach, and once as an assistant coach for the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team.” Though he played for the Hawks, they were not an Atlanta team during his playing days. This was part of the subject of our story on Lenny Wilkens.

🍑 And that, along with Atlanta Hawks fans having to endure delayed gratification, is what we explore on this week’s Stories of Atlanta.
