Dreary December

Dec. 5 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Tucker. This newsletter is full of advice, with the first being “don’t look at your weather app until Wednesday.” I like to call this particular weather pattern “early February.” Here are a few newsy items that may help you forget this nasty weather.

🥶 Tucker’s version of the North Pole will have its big opening tomorrow at the Tucker Town Green. In good news, you won’t actually be at the North Pole, where tomorrow’s high will be -15. Santa’s home base is also in its period of continuous darkness. Small blessings.

🎄Also, if your idea of enjoying the season involves driving around in your warm car, check out our holiday lights wrap-up that will guide you to the shiniest and best-decorated residential homes in the metro area.

🏡  In Tucker-adjacent news, a $5 million gift just in time for the holidays will allow St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Georgia, one of the state’s oldest and largest social services nonprofits, to help thousands of individuals facing homelessness.

❄️ Now onto the news,
Cathy and Stephanie

We can wait…..

⚖️ Sasha Swinson has not stopped visiting Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library, nor has she changed her choice of restroom there since a terse exchange with an officer led to multiple local stories about her and an internal investigation.

In October, the Brookhaven trans woman says she was misgendered and verbally accosted by a DeKalb County police officer who was on duty at the library for early voting. The officer, whom the DeKalb County Police Department has not publicly identified, is now under an internal investigation as a result of the incident.

Ahimsa House offers hope for pet owners

🦃 This Thanksgiving, Denise enjoyed a hearty meal and fellowship with her family and her beloved chihuahua, Dog. A far cry from last year, when she was feeling alone, stressed, and anxious about where she and Dog would stay.

Denise, whose last name has been withheld for her protection, says she was the victim of domestic violence, which forced her to escape her marital home in August 2024. Finding stray bullets around her home (subtle warning signs of further violence) was the last straw before leaving her ex-husband, she told Rough Draft Atlanta.

Ahimsa House, a Tucker-based organization that assists battered women and their pets, stepped in to help.

Yo, Nicky!

🥇 Greater Philadelphian-owned Nicky’s Undefeated got the double-whammy this week when it was named a best new restaurant AND a reader’s choice in this year’s picks.

According to our dining team, Nicky’s “brought yet another strong tenant to Tucker’s Main Street in 2025. It’s a restaurant and bar serving top-rate sandwiches, cheesesteaks (don’t ask for a Philly), wings, and pizza that also doubles as a Philadelphia Eagles hub.”

I’ve had the pleasure of eating here a couple of times, and I always had enough for a second delicious meal later. Pro tip: Do some jaw-opening exercises before you dive into your cheesesteak.

And another note: Non-Eagles fans are welcome at Nicky’s, but probably shouldn’t that fact, or take offense to the anti-Packers and Chiefs art taped to the counter window.
