Atlanta Public Schools is inviting students, families, staff and community members to an upcoming APS Forward 2040 Meeting, an event focused on sharing the community’s visions for the future of teaching and learning in Atlanta.
The meeting, which will take place at Herman J. Russell West End Academy on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m., will focus on building a districtwide vision around four key areas: early college, technology, arts, and biomedical and health sciences.
The Comprehensive Long-Range Facilities Plan, also known as APS Forward 2040: Reshaping the Future of Education, is a districtwide initiative to ensure APS schools and facilities align with the needs of students and families for decades to come. The plan address the district’s overarching facility priorities, including creating sustainable, high-quality learning environments and expanding access to specialized academic programs.
The APS Forward 2040 plan addresses a $100 million budget shortfall this year and an expected $57 million next year. If the school board adopts the plan, it would save an estimated $85 to $90 million and reduce capacity by 5,200, which aligns with the ongoing drop in enrollment.

Dec. 2’s meeting is the last of four meetings throughout November and December to give APS families and community members opportunities to share their feedback on the plan. Through the rest of the year, the APS Forward 2040 Task Force will continue hosting a series of subcommittee sessions focused on key areas. Upcoming meetings for the task force will cover include Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education on Dec. 8 and the Arts on Dec. 11.
APS community members who have not attended one of the four in-person visioning meetings are encouraged to participate in the community survey here. To learn more, visit atlantapublicschools.us/APS2040.
