The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that the suspect who was shot by a Sandy Springs Police officer during an assault investigation on Dec. 4 was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

LaAndre Marktanne Thomas’s body was being taken to Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, according to a news release.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting of the 27-year-old Jackson, MS, resident, according to the release.

Preliminary information indicated that Sandy Springs Police Department officers were dispatched to Dunwoody Place at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 4 in response to a 911 call. The caller said a man had assaulted her as she was walking her dog. She provided the man’s description, and officers reviewed video cameras in the area.

Thomas was located by officers at a MARTA bus stop near the 8000 block of Dunwoody Place. The GBI release said Thomas approached the officers and spoke with them. During the conversation, Thomas pulled a handgun from his waistband. One of the officers then shot Thomas, injuring him. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Once the GBI’s investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
