Rough Draft Atlanta is partnering with Community Farmers Markets to let you know what’s in season at your local market. Each week, we’ll share a list of ingredients that are farm fresh, along with a couple of recipes that include those products.

Here’s what you’ll find in the way of produce at the farmers market this week: Peppers, winter squashes (pumpkins, butternut squash, candy roaster squash), apples, beans, radishes, turnips, carrots, kale, arugula bok choy. eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, onions,  khlorabi, lettuce, potatoes, microgreens, okra, sweet potatoes, gourmet mushrooms (oyster, chanterelles, lion’s mane, shiitake, chanterelles), pears, persimmons, herbs (basil, mint, lemon balm, wormwood, cilantro, oregano, parsley, chives, dill), and chestnuts.

Look for these specialty items:  Pecans, smoked salmon and trout, flowers (marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, mixed flower bouquets), pastured pork, wild caught shrimp, eggs, goat + sheep cheese, milk, jam, chocolate, honey, oils, tea blends, cold pressed juices, hot sauce, vinegars, nut butters, spice blends, ghee, pickles, pasta, tortillas, and apple cider.

Atlanta non-profit Community Farmers Markets (CFM) has been building community through farmers markets since 2011. Operating weekly outdoor farmers markets as well as rotating farm stands are strategies by which the organization addresses food access in Atlanta. CFM also offers educational programming in the community, financial incentives to make local food more affordable, and professional development for small businesses.

See y’all at the farmers market!

Purple Sweet Potato Latkes Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, grated
  • 4 sweet bell peppers, small dice
  • 1 bunch of green onion, sliced thin
  • 1 jar of cashew cheezy sauce from @pureabundancefood
  • 1 tbs @pulpalicious Caribbean hot sauce
  • 1 tbs curry powder
  • 1/2 tbs ginger powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour
  • 2 flax eggs (2 tbs flax + 4 tbs water, let sit 5 mins until gel forms)
  • 1 tsp coconut aminos
  • Sunflower oil for pan frying

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine sweet potato, red pepper, chickpea flour, flax eggs, curry powder, ginger powder and salt. Let sit for 10 mins.
  2. While the latke mixture is setting, in a small bowl combine the cheezy sauce, pulp hot sauce and coconut aminos. Set aside.
  3. Heat a frying pan on medium high and coat the bottom of the pan in sunflower oil. Once hot, form the latkes (about 2 tbs of mixture rolled into a ball and then flattened slightly) and fry for 1-2 mins on each side, or until brown and crispy on each side.
  4. Top with a dollop of cheezy sauce and green onion and enjoy!

Honey + Sesame Sweet Potatoes Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lb sweet potatoes
  • EAV Honey from @atlantahoneynextdoor
  • ~2 tbsp olive oil
  • Pinch of pink salt
  • Pinch of black sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. Wash your sweet potatoes and cut them into small cubes. Toss them with olive oil and a heavy pinch of salt before adding to your preheated air fryer.
  2. Preheat by letting it run for at least a minute before adding your sweet potatoes. Air fryers are just small, countertop versions of convection ovens so if you have one of those, that will work fine too.
  3. Don’t crowd the fryer too much so things get crispy! For 1.5 lbs you’ll probably have enough sweet potatoes for 2 batches.
  4. Set your air fryer for 12 minutes and toss ½ way through cooking.
  5. Once done, remove and add another sprinkle of salt, a drizzle of honey, and a pinch of black sesame seeds.
